We had to put down our family pet, Moffat, named in honor of the Scottish village, yesterday. She came to us in 1991 so we opened a bottle of 91 Q d V 1991 to commemorate her passing.
On opening , it is very dark ruby. Not overly hot. Very nice black pepper, allspice, dark berry jammy nose. A hint of nice smoky maple bacon fat. Smooth mouth entry, full mouth feel, add a hint of mint to the other flavors. Nice length on the finish. 90 points.
Farewell to the old girl, Moffat.
Sad news. I drive past Moffat regularly on my way to Glasgow and will probably now always think of your dog when I do.
Without wanting to appear insensitive, perhaps you could also post this note on this month's Virtual Tasting thread which is dedicated to the 1991 vintage?
Thanks, Derek, my wife and I appreciate the thought. I recall responding to a thread about 91's but was that the August topic or is it new for September?
I tried the Q d Vargellas last night and it has lost a little. I note it was Parker's top pick for 91 with a 95 rating but I can't go that high.
Do you ever stop at Moffat or travel the back road to Edinburgh? It is a beautiful part of the world.
I have travelled the back road to Moffat many times - a fantastic drive, especially on a Yamaha Thunderace 1000cc motorcycle 8) I have also stopped off in Moffat a few times on the journey - a great place for fish-n-chips on a cold wet day or icecream in the summer.
Derek, I think about 8 or 9 times we have been to Scotland. We know it well and have many friends and contacts there. We had a dear friend in Moffat who died some years ago. We have climbed the Mare's Tail path a few times. We have some close friends in Dunoon, but the wife of the couple died suddenly two weeks ago.
We have some good friends in Edinburgh who like to drink port. We enjoyed a 92 Taylor with them last year. We have spent tiem on Arran, in and around Inverness, and Skye, but our favorite area is Glencoe, Fort William, and a great family owned Victorian hotel called the Mamore Lodge near Kinlochleven.
All great places to see. Unfotunatley, the last time I was in Glen Coe was 5 years ago and I left there in an ambulance after wrapping my motorcycle around a crash barrier - the bike was only 5 days old and it came home in a thousand crumpled pieces Luckily only my pride was seriously injured although I did have some impressive bruising to remind me of it for some months afterwards.
I'm heading up that way again next Easter, although this time it will be a more sedate affair as I'm taking the family to see the West Coast and Islands in a motorhome for a week.
If I find an internet connection I'll send you a postcard here 8)
