1922 D'Oliveiras Boal

Post by Justin A »

Popped this Christmas eve. Back label had no bottling date, so must be an older bottling. Also, had to use an Ah-so to get the cork out, as the screw pulled through the cork. Popped and poured. Holy SCHNIKES! The nose almost blew my head back. Tremendous but precise nose of burnt sugar and all the aromas of spices we love in old madeira. Color is very dark brown. Taste is on the sweeter side for Boal and I remember I could be fooled into guessing Malvasia if it was blind, but absolutely astounding concentration and balance. Lots of acidity which cuts through the sweetness. Probably a wine you want to sip, but I drank it. Hard to be picky, but would have liked a longer finish. Soooooo goood. Such a treat that these wines are still available to us. Will be a buyer for more. A wine that will make you a believer. Hard to imagine that there are better madeiras out there.

Hey Justin,

You mentioned that you would have liked a longer finish, YET you also stated that it was hard to imagine better Madeiras out there...a bit of a paradox, yes? [shrug.gif]

Since Xmas eve and this bottle, I have opened 2 other 1922 D'Oliveiras Boal from different bottling dates. Neither bottle has come close to the first one which had no bottling date on the back. I think the people who believe that some bottle age is beneficial may be on to something.

Thanks for the data points. This was one of the first "serious" Madeiras I tasted, back in the 90s. Special stuff.

I agree that older bottlings(but still with btl date) were better. Best casks first?

I believe D'Oliveiras started putting on the bottling dates in the early 1990's.
Some people like the older bottlings. Given D'Oliveiras rich style, bottle age may give a more elegent edge.
