We think we have it bad here in the USA right now. Take a look at what's going on in Portugal, Wales, France, Ireland etc ... but most are from Portugal.
Crazy but real photos!

Wow!
Some of those people are down right crazy for getting so close.

Our local news ran a story last night about people surfing off the coasts of Europe to take advantage of those waves. The Nazare ones don't, however, look as big as many past big waves there, where "biggest wave surfed" records are attempted and broken regularly.

Nazare has an underwater canyon just offshore which funnels the waves and then causes the extreme amplitude as the energy has nowhere to go but vertical.

I know that Miguel Roquette is a very serious surfer, I wonder if he's done Nazare?

I believe that Luisa Borges of Viera&Sousa is also a surfer.

Roy, You have definitely had it worse there than over here - although there was a little snow on Pico earlier in the week. As Andy says, some of those people are downright crazy, and in some cases it is "were" not are. I have not seen reports of a lot of deaths, but there have been a few. It has been warm and wet here. Apart from last night (5ºC) our lowest overnight minimum this year is 9ºC and maximums up to 16º. We can normally expect it to be a little colder, but not a lot, perhaps just nudging freezing point. Viewing from a distance I would say there is insufficient snow for skiing in the Serra de Estrelas.
