If I win the lottery then I'll move to another country; at least part time.

If I won the lottery I'd become a gentleman farmer in the Douro. ![Toast [cheers.gif]](./images/smilies/cheers.gif)

That work is too hard, especially in that heat. I wouldn't mind having an apartment in Porto and a seasonal B&B in Douro.

I meant that I'd own the house and live there, but someone else would own the vineyards and produce the grapes/Port.

And that's what A/C and Port/Tonic's are for anyways. Then some lightly chilled Tawny's or Ruby's in the evening.

I swear we should all chip in and buy a property there jointly.

You're late to the game, already been talking about this for years. Rules...everyone has to bring their Port/wine cellar with them. We're gonna hang out in the Douro and have a party till we drop. If we invite some older Port producers to also come stay, we can party even harder and longer with their company and personal contributions.Roy Hersh wrote:I swear we should all chip in and buy a property there jointly.

No, not late at all. We had an entire long discussion about that here, several years ago.
That being said, I was just trying to ressurect interest in that project.![ROTFL [rotfl.gif]](./images/smilies/rotfl.gif)

I am already here. Not in the Douro, but where I consider a more pleasant place to live. Olives instead of grapes. And no hills - we all become older every day!!
Re: Thinking of moving to a new country?
Alan, wasn't it a really difficult year for olives in Portugal in 2013?

Not Alan, but my parents kept complaining that on their end they were smaller and sparser than usual. The yield for olive oil was surprisingly good though.

Re: Thinking of moving to a new country?
Roy, Everything was looking good, albeit a very slow ripening season, until a sharp frost on the morning of 21st Nov seriously damaged everything I had still unpicked - more than half of them due to the late ripening. I posted a blog about it last night, but the short version is that despite a low yield I ended up with more oil than I had expected, 10kgs to the litre after the mill took its 18% cut. There were a lot worse samples than mine going in, and some gave up after a string of frosts. A friend a few kilometres away had a better yield, but did not finish picking. I have not heard anything from elsewhere.
I have no business connection, nor am I on commission, but I was speaking today to Remax who sold us this place - just passing seasonal greetings as we always do, and I thought about this post. Try this http://agencias.remax.pt/CasteloBranco/ ... 61012-3282 or for a better house and with a lot more potential (but no existing vines) http://agencias.remax.pt/CasteloBranco/120461028-2704
Almost every property for sale here is neglected to a greater or lesser extent, usually greater!! If anybody decides to contact the agency you need to speak to either Paulo Batista or his wife Maria José Reis. Graça Reis is Maria's mother and does not speak English.
