Port Selection and Shipment

Post by R Birkhoff »

Good day all,

My wife and I are opening a small restaurant business in the Caribbean this year, and want to devote a portion of the space to a dedicated 'Port Bar' (we are located right on the beach opposite a yacht mooring area, so this is aptly named!) We are new to both the business and the shipment of port stock to this region. If you could provide some ideas on what distributors to purchase from (ie. the US?) or know of anyone already shipping to the Caribbean that you could introduce us to, that would be very helpful. Also, could you suggest a port selection to start our inventory that includes perhaps 12 varieties to begin with, that would include mostly modest priced ports, with a couple of high value special ports? We hope to add to our collection in the near future, and very interested in joining your tour in Portugal next year. Thank you!

Hello.
I might suggest a few Madeira as well. Will hold up in an opened bottle and the high acidity will suit the climate well.
Good luck with the endeavor. [cheers.gif]

Agreed, Madeira is a lot more restaurant friendly than port. I'd also consider selling several half bottles as it is an easier sell than a whole bottle to a smaller dinner party. What do your local distributors already carry?
