Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

You've got to drink something while at the craps table, right?

In MA, we have wicked low prices on booze, no sales tax on alcohol, and there's a packy on every corner.

Holy cow, didn't realize (shipping laws aside) MA was so pro-alcohol.

Hence the consumption. We drink so much, that is why we can't easily ship to MA; liquor distributors & their lobbyist's hands are in every politician's pockets. Too much booze being sold here to let some outsider muscle in.

I tend to think that DC number isn't a true reflection of what typical residents drink. I'm guessing there is buying by VA and MD residents that work in the city, and possibly a lot of entertaining of non-resident guests.

I never found great wine shops in DC. I frequented a few that were known as Port havens back in the day, but the prices rarely were great. I found much better deals in MD, but even more so, in VA. Lots of great wine shops in Virginia, that is for sure! That might have something to do with all the wineries that have popped up in that state over the past 2 decades.

Well, I bet the NV statistic is warped by the tourism. And someone commented on the article site that NH was probably biased by outside buyers because of their cheap prices.

NH prices are not that much lower than MA prices. When NH Liquor Store has a sale, well that can be very convincing pricing. Selection is not as good as MA, but when 20 year Sandeman is $30; twist my arm!
