Fonseca Guimaerens 1958 - open or trade?

Post by Dries V. »

I have a Fonseca Guimaerens 1958 in my cellar waiting to be opened. However, looking at the extreme prices on wine-searcher and the absence of tasting notes, I am wondering if it might be better to trade/sell it.

I have the following questions:
- Does anyone have a tasting note on it?
- Is it worth the price being asked for it?
- What would you do? Try to sell and get some other vintages or consume it?

If anyone has an interest (perhaps for a Vertical Fonseca or Horizontal 58) feel free to send a PM.

Is this a Guimaraens or a Fonseca Quinta Mileau?

Pictures always help to determine condition and possible price, so if you could post a picture would be great.

1958 wasn't a great year for Port and most I've had are now past their best days. Not sure what current values* are for this so I'll let others chime in on there.

*retail prices for this, and many older Ports, can have stupidly high and unreasonable prices. Why the store hasn't sold what they have yet. So take retail prices with a grain of salt. In this case I would never pay $1,000 for one bottle of this. That is just plain crazy. So don't expect to get anywhere near that price if you sell it yourself.

i fully agree on the retail prices Andy. Personally I've hardly tasted any ports from the sixties. So if someone has a high interest to get this bottle traded for something else, I am open for that.

Below some pics. btw the importer is actually still existing and located in my hometown. Seems the bottle did not travel far yet.

Thanks for the pic and very cool the importer is still around and near you. The bottle appears to have a good fill level.

How has it been stored during its life?

Last 2-3 years in my cellar. I bought it from someone who's father passed away. I actually went to buy a Mouton Rotschild from 1981 (my birthyear) and ended up coming back with several Moutons and this port. All appeared in good condition and the wines were even protected by "shrinkwrap?". According to the seller (as always...) it was always stored in his father's cellar and his father was the 1st owner. I cannot confirm if this is true but given the condition of all the wines, I was inclined to believe him.

Had a '57 Fonseca not too long ago and was pretty good. Not as good as the near more common vintages, but certainly enjoyable. The '57 was better than expected, but a lot had to do with the cellar which was very well done. If you are into it for under $200, might as well drink it.

Yes, the retail prices for this on wine-searcher are crazy. It is rare, but that doesn't mean it is better. 1955s, a known good year, can be found around $300.
