Hi Martin,
to the forum. 1978 wasn't a "classic declaration" but there were some very nice Single Quinta Ports (SQVP) made that year and there are some nice Colheita's (Single year Tawny Ports). You generally won't go wrong with most of them, so long as they were stored correctly. I'd use winesearcher.com to see what's near you, or what you can have shipped to you, and let us know. From there we can recommend what's a good Port, price, etc.

I've just joined, so a few words about what brought me here seem to be in order...
I've been drinking red wine since I was about 10 - sometimes port but, to be honest, I didn't really notice what was going on.
A few years ago I decided to try a bottle of "good" wine - which was something of a revelation. Having spent my life around the 10 euros and below end (supermarket price), the 70 euro bottle was, I discovered, better.
But why port now, I hear them heckling from the back rows?
A few factors came together...
1) My mother gave me, when I was 10, a bottle of Martinez 1963. I was born in 1960, but she said the '63 was a lot better. My looking into wine debunked my belief that it "keeps forever", so I started looking into whether or not it should be drunk soon. It seems so. But there just seemed something wrong to just "delve" into port with what seemed to be quite a good bottle.
2) I live in Portugal, and started drinking port after dinner in cafés - they tasted different!
3) I went to a few wine tastings that had some port offerings - once more the "better" stuff was, in fact, better!
4) The (Portuguese) news last year was all about the 2011 vintage. On and on they went. And then they went on some more. So I started looking into it.
And then, the final nail...
5) I got myself a few bottles of Niepoort 2011 ("How much!" the wife said - I'm pretty sure it was an exclamation mark rather than a question mark). And I, with the wife and a friend, cracked a bottle open a few weeks ago. I just had to give it a go. We tried it in 6 tastings over 2 1/2 days. Never have I tasted something so amazing, nor something that could change character over a period of a few hours - blackberry today, black cherry tomorrow - cold today, hot tomorrow. And yes, the wife did think it was special too - that's what I call a result!
So here I am, learning new vocabulary such as "crusted", still trying to work out other vocabulary such as "VA".

Great story and more importantly, the fact that you were smart enough to include your wife was a brilliant strategy. Lots of us here know the "hide the Port" when yet another case or five come in from UPS, FedEx etc. to avoid the questions of wives. So getting yours to like that 2011 Niepoort was absolutely the best move you could've made. Share with her early on (not the 2011's unless you buy more from other producers too) something from the 1994 vintage (for example, as it is now 20 years old) and you'll win her over for life. It is worth it. Trust me!

I've been working with Andy to resolve some technical issues around name changing - we've managed now to carefully steam off the counterfeit label to reveal a 1960 Crusted Roger - mature, heavy in the nose, with a well-rounded middle, but finishing somewhat weakly.

Andy already bid me welcome in the tread with the "Best Colheitas". And thanks for that!
I am a very fortunate friend of an old Danish vinemerchant who sadly passed away last year.(94 years of age).
The Merchant was the sole Danish Importer of Niepoort Portwines back in the 1950s and 1960s
In fact my friend has done business with 3 generations of Van der Niepoorts. Eduard, Rolf and Dirk.
I have had wonderfull Ports with my old friend. He kept his Colheita from 1900 until his death, he wanted to save it, to serve at his 100s birthsday...
The best port in his collection was the speciel bottle from 1927 (the birthyear from Rolf).
3 speciel moments with my wery good friend was sharing the vintage from 1955, a VV (the original) and a colheita 1908.
I am so greatfull to carry on his passion of great ports (though ist an expensive hobby
). Every time I see a bottle of niepoort, I want to buy it... And I really had to sit on both hands and wallet when I saw the Colheita 27 on a Danish wineauction last year... Cheers everybody (and sorry for my english, it is a little rusty). All the Best from MacAllan

No, I am not a member of the Portwine club in Odense. I have my own club consisting of: my 16 year old daugther, my girlfriend, and some friends and family who enjoyes our diners, and especially the Ports for desserts.
The Niepoort Colheita 1927, is the one with the special salute from father Eduard to his son Rolf. Only 360 bottles where "filled".And they never met the winemarkets, But where handed out to speciel friends of the House.
Bottled in 1941 and recorked in 1978.

I'm NIck and I live in Cheshire in the UK
My first taste of port about eight years ago, got me hooked, it was at the end of a meal hosted by the Moxy company in Norway
I don't know a great deal about port, but I do know what I like
As I am 60 this year, it might not be too wise to start collecting anything that has to lie for an extended period,
unless one of my two daughters gets the taste for port.
I do like Dows style of LBV and VP, I also love Dows midnight port just to drink in the evening
Any suggestions on not too pricey VP to collect and drink in the not too distant future would be welcomed
I have just found Dows crusted port in my local supermarket, so that is my next sampling when it has settled

Thank you for joining us here. If you like Dow's and depending on budget, the 1985 is great and 1980 at 34 years of age is a beauty too. If you can find and afford a 1966 ... to me that is the Dow drinking at its best today. Love it!

Dow's makes some lovely Ports. Being in the UK you've got access to many very nice Ports at varying price points. I would also keep an eye out for the "off vintages", or non-classically declared years. Bascially all those years between the biggies of 1970, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1991/92, 1994, etc. 1995's are drinking very nicely at the moment and generally are fairly inexpensive (at least here in the States).
