I agree with your assessment, but have noted higher prices for the 1977 than the 1970. Go figure.

The wine spectator (Suckling) gave the 1977 100 points. It been expensive for as long as I've collected Port.

I've always liked them in reverse. I'd rather have the 1970 Taylor and the 1977 Fonseca over the 1970 Fonseca and 1977 Taylor.

Do I see any trade opportunities?

I prefer Fonseca in 1970. In 1977 there is a lot of bottle variation. I've had great versions of both Taylor and Fonseca, and many weak bottles as well.

That would require that I have the "off" bottles to trade, which I do not.

I really like well cellared bottles of Fonseca 77 and split one in a wine bar a couple of weeks ago with Derek over a bowl of chips after a particularly hard day in the office. While I marginally prefer the 1970 vintage, it was damn fine juice and there was no 1970 on the wine list.

So I thought I had finished off a bottle of Vintage Port three weeks ago. However, although I knew there had been one last glass of the 1994 Nacional that was opened here 3 weeks ago, I was mistaken. Found it on a side shelf where I must have stuck it in my office. Didn't notice it until last night and figured it was empty. Well, I was mistaken and although at room temperature (with a T stopper), there was 3-4 oz. left. I figured, "three weeks, this will be dumbed down a lot and likely just 'ok' at best." Again I was mistaken. Shocking how fresh and jam packed it was with fruit. The only negative was that the aromatics were far less complex and intense than the initial whiffs weeks ago. But an interesting learning experience for sure.

1970 Niepoort Colheita, bottled 1984
Picked up in a mixed lot, the rest being VPs, I didn't have great expectations for this given all the time in the bottle. But while not as complex as something with more cask time, it was a wonderful surprise.

1994 Ramos Pinto VP.
Much improved from day one to day two.
Sadly, feels more like your typical sandeman founders reserve than like the 1994 Graham VP i opened last weekend.
