Allan,
What's that Port? It was obviously bottled a long time ago as it has the old style Selo on it. And how was it.

And love my Durand, the best corkscrew for getting out old corks.

That port is a Niepoort the best Vinho do Porto in Porto.

At first a little stuffy odor. But after now 5-6 hours it has opend up beautifully, with that speciel Niepoort taste; sweet and fruity, and with a subtile touch of alcohol.

Allmost like an old Tawny, just a little lighter.

I dont now the age. What Can You tell looking at the Selo?

I know I did torn the label in my winefridge....But That didnt affect the taste....

Cheers

That style of Selo was discontinued around the early 1970's. So most likely that was bottled some time on or prior to the early 70's. I would assume, based on the name and your note it was a more basic Tawny or Ruby. Probably not meant to age for a long time, but glad it still showed well.

Over the years, I have had many "ordinary" but old Tawnys. Portwine produced to consuming rather than to store away.

But Niepoort's tend to have the quality to hold for decades.

# Senior fine old Niepoort Tawny (both thick and thin bottles)
# Niepoort Cordiale
# Niepoort very old dry White
# Niepoort Blansec
# Niepoort Presidente

And the one I am drinking to Night, the Niepoort Cocoa, bought in Portugal for 25 euros.....

Great Stuff.

And today on Sonday, the two remaning servings, where just amazing....Luckily there is still another bottle of the same kind stored away...

All the best from east to West.

Nice Monique, coincidentally I brought a 1987 Qta de Vargellas VP to a wine judging competition I was at in Yakima, WA and the winemakers there all went gaga over it.

To celebrate the Midsummerday and the nightless night we had a small tasting last weekend.
Burmester 20 Years Old Tawny
Barros Colheita 1996
Calem 2002 Colheita
The latter two both bottled in 2013. The Burmester 20 Years Old Tawny turned out to be the most to my taste. Lots of raisins, nuts - and style.

Also some Carm Branco 2011 (DOC Douro) and Proeza 2011 Tinto (DOC Dão) with the dinner.
In case you're interested we had "sopa de cenoura", a carrot soup with loads of tarragon and some saucy chicken from the oven. ;)

I love Burmester 20 y.o. too. And it's great to have people from Finland and even from the same city here!

1999 Kopke LBV.
I had purchased cheeses for something ruby, but Marijke and company wanted to also break out cigars, so I wanted a beverage with perhaps with a hint of tawny character. Some of these older Kopke LBVs have been overly advanced in age, so I thought it would be worth a try. This 750 wasn't as advanced as some of its contemporaries in 375s, but it still went well with everything.

1986 Noval Colheita, bottled 2007, from the FTLOP buying op a while back.

Went great with the buttermilk battered rosemary fried chicken at the Purple Cafe in Woodinville.

Loved the San Leonardo 20. Tastes much older than 20 years old. Rich, caramel and butterscotch flavors. Different in style, but up there in quality with the Ferreira Duque de Braganca.

I learnt on Tuesday that this was bottled in 1971 and is wine that is probably from the 1890 vintage.

Niepoort 1984 Colheita bottled 2011. A Good Colheita, complex, could have more depth, a bit hot. Definitively lacking the Niepoort touch I normally expect, nonetheless good but I would hesitate to buy new bottlings, it does seem tired for a 30 year old Tawny compared to what this house is normally producing.
