Me too! Also a 1985 Churchill VP. Both at a BBQ competition for a handful of other judges and team cooks.

The Ferreira was the clear favorite. The Churchill showed a bit of VA, but the others didn't really notice it. No decant for either, and the Churchill improved with time in the glass. Might have been competitive with ~4 hours of decant.

A Nice dumpy bottle of Fine Old Niepoort Tawny.

And surprisingly the cork showed the year of bottling: 1977. I have had many Fine Olds before, But the first time I see a "birthyear".
Does anyone knows when the juice originally was harvested? My guess is 10 to 12 years prior to the age of bottling?

Thanks! I agree....and yes we plan to drink them in pairs to contrast as ordered above.

Very dry, at least to my palate. But also very nice. I'll post a TN after it's had a day to mellow out a bit.

Great Stuff. And a certain explosion of a great tasting experience.

But the other half is Maby more exciting. Various ports from different Shippers, Old tawnys, reserves, bottles celebrating special occasions.

This friday a Cockburns fine old White, with the old IVP selo.

And the taste: smooooth and fabulous!

Just opened this evening, Kopke 40 YO Tawny (old one, bottled in 1980). Only one bottle left from a total of 9, all of which were still in excellent shape!!

Checking out a new wine bar in London we bought and drank a bottle of Churchill 1994 and a bottle of Offley 1977.

I am going to London myself. Where is the new place? The just closed the Churchill Porthouse in june this year.

This was the Davy's wine bar The Exchange at Woolgate, close to the Barbican but you can find both these ports on the wine list of most branches of Davy's in London. Another chain to try is El Vino.

And when you know the dates of your trip to London, let us know and we might be able to organise a few of the UK based members to meet up with you during your visit.

They used a driven cork. Always cool to see these older bottles and labels. Glad it showed well.

I love hearing about those old bottles... And especially love the photos!
