For The Love Of Port

Four bottles of LBV and six VPs, 5 were 2013 and one from 2012 for evaluation last night and tonight and possibly again on Friday.

It's been a Port kind of holiday. I have opened 3 bottles of 1997 Niepoort, 1 bottle of 1976 Krohn Colheita and 1 bottle of 1900 Krohn Reserva. Tonight's star is a 1945 bottle of Croft which was bottled in 1947.

Mr. Bull, we hope you write TNs.

I'd be very interested to hear if your 1997 Niepoort's showed consistency throughout or the bottled offered distinctly different impressions.

I had the 1900 Krohn @ Christmas and wonder if our bottles were similar.

Lastly, you mentioned one of my all-time favorite Ports, the 1945 Croft. Such an incredible bottling and I hope yours delivers its best, and if so ... you are going to love it.

The last bottle of 2015 and the first port of 2016 was a bottle of Taylor 1966. The cork had collapsed into the bottle but the fill level was good and the colour was sound. It had been sealed with a plastic capsule that seems to have done the job normally done by the cork.

The port was pretty good and was a nice way to start the new year.

I also opened a half bottle of Croft 2004 LBV (which is the port that Tesco in the UK were selling for £2.50 per half about 5 years ago). Still surprisingly youthful and very acidic.

Finally got around to opening a San Leonardo "60." Really nice. Note to be posted.

1977 Grahams VP. This vintage is in a good place. A little hot initially, but the fruit is decedent, smooth. The heat gives in a long finish. For those who dismissed this vintage should try a bottle again soon.

Just decanted a 1995 Quinta do Tedo VP. Their first after acquiring the property.

Decanted a few hours ago a Dow's 1985 to see if I can break the bad luck of my last two '85's. Oh my, curse broken.

True. Though across the board 1995's are maturing at a much faster clip than most classically declared VP's.

True. Though across the board 1995's are maturing at a much faster clip than most classically declared VP's.

But for $30-$35 for so many houses, really good medium drinking value. I agree though, probably would have been somewhat of a disappointing full declaration.

Friday night is Allways a huge Portcelebration

My beautiful daugther and lovely girlfriend....the two loves of my live, deserved something nice.
Found a leeking bottle of 1935 Colheita from the house of Constantino's in my portfridge. And surprisingly a leeking bottle of Niepoorts 2005 VP.
Opend both...
The 1935 had an odd taste of pineapple, quite sweet, But undrinkable...
The 2005 had tons of fruits, But very heavy on the tannins. The tongue curled op, like a sandpaper went sweeping by. (So, we left it on the counter for today.... A much more pleasant experience.)

Furtunately I had a third bottle standing. And "Old Rerserve" from Offley. A standard Tawny from early 1980s. And YES finalIy we could start celebrating the friday.

One bonus feature concerning the Constantino's. Still had the official pricetag on it. 20,00 Escudos.... Equivalent of - hold Your horses - of 0,1€ ....

Just have to mention, that the Niepoort 05 opend yesterday, some 30 hours ago, has been enjoyed tonight.
Still very fruity, But the tannins "has left the building".
