Barbeito 2001 Malvasia Colheita
Cocoa on the nose, flavors of Belgian milk chocolate and cherries. Can’t wait for this to open up more.

D’Oliveiras Terrantez 1988
Classic Terrantez flavors with creamy caramel. Perfect acid balance.

1971 D'Oliveiras Terrantez was opened at the end of the Super Bowl for a friend in LA rooting for the Patriots. While I hate them, I like him and wouldn't be spiteful and not open it just because they won #6.

I believe this D'Olly has now surpassed the 1988 for me and is the finest of the new age Terrantez bottlings, compared to even the 1977 and others.

I was thinking the same thing the last time I had the 71 a couple of years ago. Not surprising, I guess, seeing how similar we rate Madeiras [cheers.gif]

The 71 d'Oliveiras T is my favorite of the bunch too!

Has anybody tasted their new 78 Terrantez?

Not had them side by side, but I'd rank them 77 best, then 71, and 88.

I agree with you now, Roy, but only changed my mind a couple years ago at Madeirathon. Recent bottlings of the 1971 are MUCH better than those of several years ago, IMHO. Just needed more time in wood, I guess. [cheers.gif]

I posted on Instagram earlier today. I had opened a 1926 Barbeito Verdelho recently, to drink the evening of 10 Years After, my father's passing. This was his birth year and my only remaining bottle. I remember opening this identical Madeira with him as he turned 70, and wil not much of a drinker at all, less so fortifieds as I grew up, he did love Madeira and Port later in life. I need to find one more of these for his 100 birthday celebration with my brother in 2026!

1900 JBF Bual
1900 Barros e Sousa Bual
Both were opened this evening at 7:30pm EST.
The JBF immediately gave off a fanstasic array of spices, caramel, and figs. It took all of my willpower not to pour the bottle straight down my gullet.
The Barros e Sousa was all about bottle stink-- turpentine and a hint of caramel; I can tell this will be a beauty, with some air-time.

On Friday, my friends are opening a 12 liter bottle of 2000 Pergole Torte. That evening, we will consume half the bottle with dinner, followed by these Madeiras.
On Saturday evening, we will drink the second half of the bottle, watching its evolution. Again, I'll break out these two 1900's for dessert.

1988 Terrantez - I must keep my hands off these 88T D'Oliveiras bottles, but I've had a hankering for Terrantez lately.

Nothing new opened, but I did finish 3 bottles that had been open for varying amounts of time.

A friend served us seared Kobe beef (as well as a US-bred similar style of beef) and we finished off a 1989 D'Oliveiras Malvasia, a 1987 D'Oliveiras Boal, and a RWC Imperial Malmsey. The latter two were down to about 1/4 of a bottle each, so were really just tastes. The Malvasia had been open a couple of months, the Boal had been open a year or two, and the Malmsey had been open... 4 years? All were fantastic and paired exceptionally well with the rich, fatty beef.
