For The Love Of Port

I am used to complex system with Bordeaux which is really hard to fully understand even for French, or people from Bordeaux.
But Port system is definitely a hard one too!
I'm still working and try to understand by myself and I think I'm starting to understand better. At least for the essential.
Yet, I will certainly have a few questions for you!

I'm Bradley Bogdan, currently a resident of Boise, ID, where I'm in grad school for social work. I work (very) part time at a local wine shop, have worked with a couple wineries in just about every capacity, and love sharing bottles with enthusiasts wherever I can find them, new or seasoned. Believe it or not, the wine that got me into port was actually not really a port at all, but an R. L. Buller & Son dessert wine from Australia, which opened my eyes to fortified wines in general. My other (non-port) passions include running, Riesling, most sports, and the outdoors. Pleasure to meet you all!

New guy here from Portlant, ORE. Only been drinking Port for a few years, but it appeals to me on so many levels that its sure to claim many a paycheck over the coming years. Other interests are music (instruments), my dogs and Wife, and bad cinema.

I am Jamie and I was born in 1955. I reside in the Midwest north of Chicago. My father first introduced me to wine when I was a sophomore in high school. He also introduced me to several wine groups of which I am now a member. My wife was also born in 1955 and married in 1980. We currently have 4 btls of '80 Dow (thank you FTLOP) and I have longed for port from 1955 (18 btls) and during the cold winter months, I love to have a glass before heading off to sleep. I am new to the sight and excited to be a part of the community.

Soon this group will have you drinking chilled Tawny Port on a warm summer afternoon and evening, buying way more 1955 and 1980 Ports, and just more Port overall....we are "Port pushers" you know

My name is Matthew, I'm 27 and from Edmonton, Canada. I've always enjoyed port; I like the flavours and prefer the sweetness over other wines. I stumbled across this site while searching about port sippers and decanting port. I've already learned quite a bit browsing and decided to stay as it really seems like a great site.

I've never been to DeVine's but I'll have to check it out. I'd be interested in seeing your Port presentation in November so be sure to send me a message when you come up! I wonder what it is about Edmonton that inspires so many Port drinkers...

I am not really sure. But it is amazing to see how they fill the deVine's event every year and the shop carries a ton of Portuguese wine and plenty of Port too. But, oh ... those prices in Alberta! The wine buyer/co-owner is from Portugal, which explains the shops deep interest and shelf space alloted to the wines.

I'm a newcomer to the forums. I grew up in CT now live in Los Angeles where I produce film and tv (mostly film). I thoroughly enjoy port and madeira, though I have also have a wine cellar filled with some other goodies. I tend to enjoy the camaraderie and the sharing of Port and Madeira with other lovers of Port and Madeira, however, and thought that joining in the fun of the forums is really only a step away from just that. I am always excited by the hunt for that special bottle, as well as going to tastings with other lucky enthusiasts in attendance. Surely, I am but an amateur compared to all of you here; but I am humbled enough by tastings and sips that I have decided no matter how much I drink, I will always be a student of the trade, learning more with each passing pour.

I should note that while I thought I had always liked Port, it was when my wife and I spent about a week in Portugal as the last leg of an around-the-world honeymoon, where we really sunk (drowned?) our palates into lots of port, both red and white, and fell in love (with the port, of course!). My fondness (nay, infatuation) with Madeira followed almost immediately, though I have yet to travel to the island itself.

I look forward to reading (and writing, a bit) here, and continuing my endless education as well as sharing a passion for these wonderful wines. Please feel free to reach out to me any time.

Welcome to the forum and for the introduction! You are so right, the best thing for me about enjoying all things about wine is the constant learning that goes with it. I live not to far from you, east of downtown, well so long as traffic isn't too bad. Hopefully we can share some bottles sometime soon. I have periodic gatherings at my house, mostly informal and always laid back, of which I am long overdue for one. I'll try and let you know when the next one is, but if I forget keep an eye on the Offline section where I will announce it.

Thanks for the welcome, folks! And yes, Roy, your trips sound amazing. Filming being the tricky medium it can be, I think I'd have to take a special trip out there just for filming... although I'd certainly take a camera with me on one of your trips, I think bringing a small crew out to the island specifically to film interviews, b-roll landscapes, heck --- if we get a stroke of luck -- maybe even a helicopter flyover of the island! Ok, now I'm just getting ahead of myself. But going on one of your trips sounds like it would a perfect "scouting" trip -- nay, just a perfect trip in general! Now if only I could make the time.... hey, I guess I could consider it "work," at this point, right? haha.

Even though I've been a member for awhile, I've never introduced myself. My family and I live in Sunnyvale, CA (in Silicon Valley), and I teach elementary school in Santa Clara. I've collected wine since 1983, when I turned 21. Back then, had I known about Madeira, I certainly would have taken advantage of those 1980s prices, ergh...

I hope to learn and meet up with some of you!
