On the eve of 4th of July, a tasting of 2 mystery Madeiras
Here's a link to my latest blog post, describing a tasting of two vintage Madeiras today--an 1880 and an 1842 Terrantez--and my attempt to unravel the mystery of their cryptic labels: http://rjonwine.wordpress.com/2010/07/0 ... a-mystery/

A fun read, thanks Richard. I suggest you email Peter or wait a short while until he sees this thread and maybe he can unlock the riddle about these bottlings.

Roy,
Thanks. I definitely was going to see what Peter might have to say on these bottlings--I think I took it about as far as I could with my sources. I'll email him.

Roy,
Peter did respond with a lengthy comment on the blog where he indicates who the likely producers of the 1880 were, and pretty strong suggestion that the "1842 Terrantez" is a fake that has appeared a number of times on the island. I really appreciate his additional info.
