Offley Baron de Forrester "1951 Reserve" Tawny Por

Post by Jay Hack »

I bought a six bottle lot at auction two weeks ago because my wife and I were both born in 1951, which was an awful year for wine in Europe and this was my big chance to drink some birth year wine. Picked it up today. The label says "bottled in 1988" and the quality of the label, bottle fill, capsule and that seal you get over the cork (I don't know what it is called) are all virtually like knew. The bottles are numbered and mine are in the 33,000s, so it's not exactly a limited edition. I tried to find out something about the wine on the web, but came up empty except for find a few other bottles around the world. I can't even find a web site for the producer. Does anyone have any info on the wine or a sugestion as to where I might be able to find out more?
Thanks Roy

Jay,

I don't have any of my books with me so can't help directly, but I would recommend that you get hold of one of Richard Mayson's books on Port and the Douro. He will probably include something there on Offley's wines.

IIRC, Baron Forrester is a figure from the history of the Douro and production of port wine, but I don't recall any details.

If you have no luck on this forum, post another message and I'll try to look up the wine when I have the chance.

Jay,

I remembered to look up the Offley name last night and this is a very brief summary of what Richard Mayson had to say.

Offley is now part of the Sogrape group and Boa Vista is its main Quinta, although the name "Boa Vista" is used principally as a brand name and not as a designation of a single quinta wine.

The Baron de Forrester label is their brand name for their tawnies, which are of a high standard. This is a leading brand in Portugal and Italy. Mayson makes no mention of any colheitas released under this brand name.
