H. M. Borges Old Reserve Malmsey

Post by Gary Banker »

$34.99 at Marty's Fine Wines in Newton, MA. This is the 10-year madeira. Opening the bottle last night, the fragrance was muted. There was little acidity, but the sweetness and caramel were very pleasant. This was a very nice wine that would be a wonderful daily drink. Today, the acidity arrived. This is the finest 10-year madeira I have had. The acidity and sweetness are well balanced and the alcohol is not prominent. To my taste, this is better than the RWC Imperial Malmsey.

I need to go back and order a case of various 10-year Borges madeiras and find out if the importer brought in any of the 15-year

As Dan noted in the Port section, I also went out to look for bargains on the Massachusetts sales tax holiday weekend. In addition to 3 (all they had) of the Borges, I bought Blandy's 1977B at $144, 2 Blandy's 1976T ar $120, and 5 Donnhoff 2007 Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese at $35.

Who's bringing in Borges? I'd love to get a case of the 15yo!

The importer listed on the bottle is:

Aidil Wines & Liquors
Newark, NJ 07102
973-642-0044
http://www.aidilwines.com/

If the 15-yo are better than 10-yo, I would certainly like to try them. The store also had the basic wines, but I did not buy any.

It is not due to lack of trying, trust me there. I spent two years trying to help here on the W. coast and in Alberta, Canada too. Aidil is a top notch importer and one of the best for a full lineup of Portuguese wines.

I've ordered a case of the 10-year malmsey. According to the store, the distributor carries only the 10-year malmsey and two 3-year wines. Let's give thanks for the 3-tier system. I asked them to check to see if the distributor can get other wines, but I'll probably have to contact Aidil to see what other stores might carry the Borges wines.
