Gums affected by alcohol

I'm starting to realize that my gums are being affected, rather unpleasantly. I don't think it is because of my hard toothbrush I have, but instead, because of the numerous wine tasting I participate in, not to mention the amount of alcohol I consume. Even if I spit, I find that after 30 minutes tasting my gums get sensitive and my mouth dries.
Do you have a similar problem? Is there any way to avoid this?

Sadly, I suspect that the only way to avoid it is to attend fewer tastings.

Perhaps a good drink of water swished around the mouth between tastes? I mostly attend tastings of non-fortified wines, but certainly the more water consumed in the process, the better, for many reasons...

Try Tums or something to neutralize the acidity.

+1 on the water. It helps reduce the acid in your mouth. Also a good idea if you drink orange juice or carbonated beverages according to my dentist.

Use a soft toothbrush and brush your teeth like you would wax a car, my dentist says...a soft touch is best.

Oscar,
I have the perfect solution.
You are young and have a need to keep your gums healthy for many years to come. I am old and time is running out. You could employ me to accompany you to all of these wine and port tastings so that I could taste the wines and tell you what they taste like. Your gums will last forever!

Sounds a good idea Derek. But first we have to test if we both like the same wines. Next time you're in town lets set up a tasting to check the accuracy of you taste buds

Hmmm? You might need to hire another helper to taste the pink ones

Another suggestion, just hire Derek to come along and brush your teeth, for you!
