For The Love Of Port

Frederick Blais has designated me to choose the next port for the virtual tasting, after I made a couple of suggestions. We weren't sure whether to stay with an NV or go to LBV so we thought a poll of three ideas I had would decide.

This is the first time I have ever posted a poll on any board.

I have posted it to run 12 days which willl conclude April 23 and that will give everyone a week to procure a bottle and we will begin the tasting on May 1, 2006.

To be sure , post your reasons and try to persuade others coming to the poll to prefer your choice and vote accordingly. Bias , prejudice, bribery , trickery, flattery, are all okay here.

Taylor 2000 LBV...We've done a 10-year Tawny, and a Ruby. I think it is time for a LBV 8)

Even though I've already tasted taylor's 2000 LBV in a restaurant, as Andy is saying, I think it is time for a LBV.

Well, my vote is for the Six Grapes. I think it would be worthwhile to work our way through all of the major rubys so that we can have a thorough reference. Then move on to another style to explore in the same manner. I have found that organizing the tasting process in this way, keeping similar wines close to each other in time, adds to my ability to distinguish differences.

Roy, not that I don't find it interesting but I'm not sure everyone can afford it and it is available for each in their wine shop. As far as I'm concerned I would not open the only bottle I have soon and I can't afford buying one in Quebec for 200$ us right now.

I never quite liked the Taylor LBV's, but the 2000 was the first in a long row that I could appreciate. Only tasted it once, so I'd like to see if I still feel the same...

I've gone for the Graham 6 Grapes. I quite like Steve's arguments for tasting through a style before moving on to another style.

However, if we end up tasting the Taylors 2000 LBV then I would be almost as happy.

Mind you, following on from Roy's note I do want to make sure that at some point in the future we taste a vintage port - but will look for Fred to guide us to choose something that he is able to open and participate in (Fonseca 2003 in halves, perhaps?)

As I understand this virtual tasting theme created by Frederick, we are tasting the everyday stuff , not the very special stuff.

However, I would suggest the use of a poll to see if we want to go to the very special VP's for virtual tastings and then another poll to select one.

Richard and Roy, my main objective with the Virtual tastings was really to get the most people jumping in and talk about a wine. I really like the way the tread of the Fonseca bin 27 is evolving. By keeping the price down and by choosing high availability products I think we will always be able to get most of the people involved.

Right now, most of the regular have share their comments, I'd still like to hear about those who read but are shy to post and moving to a VP could fear them further from posting.

If everyone is willing to go with a VP I have no opposition, but lets have a debate or a poll to choose one that will fit the most.

I agree with Fred, we need to stick to cheaper and easier to find ports to get the most people involved. In the future I would love to do a VP, and think that is a great idea, just not right now.

We would love to hear from you, even if it is a simple note saying you enjoyed or didn't enjoy the port. I encourage everyone to write something, anything, PLEASE :!: :!:

Why would I want to mess around with success?

I have stated many times here that this site applauds differing opinions and thrives because of them. Please carry on, you're doing just fine and I appreciate your involvement and more so, taking lead on the virtual tastings. It is clear as a bell now, what others prefer to taste virtually together at this time. Learning how to be a better taster and appreciating Port at the same time is a very positive outcome of your efforts!

I was lucky enough to receive a case of this for my 41st birthday a couple of weeks ago 8)

I opened the first one last night and sipped half of it. The rest will go tonight and I'll post a TN.

As for using this for a VT I am not in favour for 2 reasons:

(a) not enough people will be prepared to pay £50 ($100) to do it

(b) having only just tasted half a bottle of this for the first time I think it's way too young to drink
