1983 Berry Brothers Vintage Port -- by Warrre's

Post by Al B. »

This is the first part of my two part experiment to confirm what we have been told - that the wines in the Berry's and Justerini's own label selections are the shippers' first choice wines, just under a different label.

The wine came from a bottle with a cork in good condition and decanted easily off the sediment giving a wine with a beautiful clear colour. Always a good sign, the room filled with a beautiful boquet as the wine went into the decanter.

2 hours after deacanting, I took this note.

Deep rich red colour, dark centre, holding into the rim with a slight hint of brown at the edge. Modest fruity nose of blackcurrants and vanilla, with a hint of mint (really made my mouth water).

After a few minutes of sniffing the wine I took a sip. Coffee and treacle were the immediate flavours, followed by a mid-palate of reasonable complexity that brought waves of fruit and sweet blackcurrants. The chocolate toned aftertaste was of modest intensity and had a good length.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable glass of wine. Nothing stunning but well balanced across the whole experience. 91/100.
