I'm planning to buy a Vintage 1970 for a present. Any comments on what to buy?

Also I won't be giving it away before 2010. Should I buy it now or wait four years? Will it keep another four years?

Lars,

Part of the answer will depend on how much you would like to spend - your choice will range from (at UK prices) about £25-30 per bottle up to around £350. All of these wines will keep for four more years (maybe the best will even keep for forty more years!), although I would recommend that you buy from a reputable merchant so you can be certain that they have been stored properly.

Of the wines at the lower end of the price range that I have seen on the UK market recently, I can recommend the Gould Campbell 1970.

I see that Farrs have Fonseca 70 (one of the very best 70s) at GBP62.5 per bottle (after tax it'll be nearer GBP80) but you have to spend GBP500 with them, so you'd have to buy all 9 of them!

You'd probably get a single bottle of Fonseca 70 somewhere for about GBP100.

In my view, the under-appreciated Warre 70 is a good bet. You can get it for less than GBP40 per bottle at auction here; I'm sure you could get it at about GBP60 retail.

Lars,

Welcome to the FORUM. When you have a moment, please update your profile with your last name included. Thanks!

You can always spend a bit more and buy a great bottle of the 1970 Nacional.

Best regards,

Roy

Lars,

I've found the Niepoort '70 to be an excellent port. Although it is a little difficult to locate, the extra effort is well worth it!
