What have you opened this week?

I was reading through the "What Ports Have You Purchased This Week" thread a few days ago and marvelling at some of the fabulous ports that people have bought over the last 18 months and wondered how many of these bottles have been opened.

So I thought I would start a thread to record the bottles we open.

To start off, I opened a really horrid bottle of Churchill 1992 LBV on Saturday and a much more pleasant bottle of Martinez 1963 (the first one I've ever tried) on Sunday.

Taylor's 2004 LBV

I was seriously unimpressed by Taylor's 2001 LBV, and then very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the 2003 LBV from Taylor. How does the 2004 LBV compare with these?

1994 Warre VP. I bought a few cases for a song a while back and split them with a friend. He has served about 6-7 bottles of this over the last year, so I have quite an impression on this wine.

Let me leave it at; I don't plan to open one of mine for a long time. This vintage has the stuffing to be one of Warre's best post 70's vintages for sure.

Grahams 1999 Quinta Dos Malvedos VP


@ Al B; IMHO : The 2004 (~£13) is a slightly more robust (some say "raw") version of the 2003 - which was very good for an LBV. The 2004 seems to show some heat with a bunch of fruit (cherry/strawberry jam - followed by some structure) with a Chocolate end. Not bad for a "school night" drinker!

...Had a lot of company this week: Fonseca Bin 27 (very good--$7 for half bottle) and Cockburn Special Reserve Ruby ($14). I find the new and improved Bin 27 (or the "retro") to be an attractive everydayer. The Cockburn is OK, I've had it numerous times before--I would call it acceptable and affordable.

I opened a bottle of Morgan Brothers 1991 last night. I'm trying to keep myself down to just one of these relaible old faithfuls per year - but failing. I opened one 6 months ago as well.

1995 Smith Woodhouse LBV. Yummy as always! I have a little bit left over to drink tonight, too.

Not a real Port, but opened the 10 year old Tawny from Ficklin, California. From Portuguese varieties, quite nice and one of my favorite port-styled wines.

I have some 1994 Rozes LBV that has been quite nice the past couple times I've had them. How's the VP?

I opened Dow 1958, 1963 and 1977 a couple of nights ago as part of a Dow offline (which also featured vintages from 1966, 1970, 1972, 1980, 1983, 1985 and 1991 - plus a Sandeman 1982 because we ran out of port)

The 1994 Rozes was very nice. I'd call it an elegant, smooth drinking VP. Not as fruit forward as some and not a blockbuster by any means, but I found it to be a well integrated, elegant VP.
