Noval '58 - a wine with a chequered reputation from personal experience, but this bottle superb and at perfect maturity..

Re: What have you opened this week?
Sitting on Deathrow:
1) 50 years old Tawny from Martinez bottled in 1973
2) Quinta do Rodo (Ferreira) 1932
3) Borges Vintage 1955
Having a good friend over on friday, with no experience with old Ports, so he might be in for a Treat.
Have read that the Borges 1955, could be a fraud? With a cork from 1980?
Thats the reason for the Ferreira. (Normally 2 bottles, should be enough for 2 guys)
And my Portfriends in Arms I have to be apologizing for my lacking of tasting notes.
I drink a lot of exiting old Ports, But I lack the skills of describing the Ports!
All the Best

1984 Kopke Colheita (375), first with Marijke, then shared with others the next night at which point it was distractingly spirity.

Re: What have you opened this week?
Tonight is one of those nights when I think I'm going to 'do a Derek' as my car suffered a minor assault today (I was not at the wheel at the time, but culprit has confessed..)
Death row ignored, takeaway curry ordered, bottle of Pocas 10yr (bottled in 1979) at the ready - there'll be none left in the morning..

The Rodo 1932 never got opend, because the Borges 1955 was allright. Maby a little tired, and 10 years from its Best, But surely a great encounter.
The 90 years old Martinez was outstanding. Had everything, caramelcolour, Big Nose, deep taste of citrus and coffee.
Vibrant and still very fresh.
After the 2 bottles, we just had a sip from a Taylor 20 Y bottled in 1985, and a Niepoort 10 Y bottled in 1982.
All in All a great evening

For Saturday with the gents:
All 1995 VPs:
Warres Q d. Cavadinha
Taylor Q.d. Vargellas
Smith Woodhouse Madelena
Graham Malvedos
Fonseca Q Guimareans
Ferreria
Dow Q.d. Bomfim
Churchill Q.d. Agua Alta
Wish I had a Vesuvio and to a lesser degree a Delaforce--still it should be a very nice lineup. I was going to decant about 12 hours prior---does that sound right?

Re: What have you opened this week?
The 1995 Vesuvio isn't stellar, but it probably could hold it's own against some of those others John.
I opened a 1997 Niepoort 375ml this evening. Total VA when I sniffed the cork, but it was fine with lamb chops. After the lamb was done, just so-so, maybe 88 points.

Nice line up. Somewhere between 8-10 hours probably would be fine for most.John M. wrote:For Saturday with the gents:
