I took a bottle of S. Leonardo 30 Year Old Tawny Port (June #1!) to the Cruizin' Chelan Pro Barbecue Classic for dinner on Friday night. Went great with a french loaf and some fromager d'Affinois! Also didn't hurt that the steaks were prime center cut ribeyes prepared by a Steak Cookoff Association grand champion. :-)

Nice! Any particular event?

I've just finished a fabulous bottle of Vesuvio 1994.
My brain processed that in the wrong order and read that the event that prompted the opening of a 1927 Taylor was finishing a 1994 Vesuvio. And it made sense.

No particular event. It was a bottle that I picked up with my brother-in-law about a year ago and was time to drink. It showed surprisingly young for a 90 year old Port. A very nice experience.

Had these last night with the Ports fellows. The 1983 Dows was slightly oxidized --yet still enjoyable (actually tasted much better than it smelled). The other 5 showed very well with the two Vesuvios and the Fonseca topping the charts. WOTN was the 1997 Vesuvio. The Churchill surprised me as I have never liked and of this brand, and here this port was quite lovely. The Vesuvios and the Fonseca has much more aging potential--I've not have many Vesuvios but every time I do I am impressed and happy. Sorry no notes, I have a head cold and was off my game.

1968 Krohn Colheita, bottled 2008, purchased from Premier Cru before they collapsed. June #2! Showed very well compared to previous bottles from this same batch, but I didn't take notes. (Hard to do while at a BBQ competition.)

Cool tasting and bummer on the 1983 Dow's. When it shows well it rocks...but I've also had a duff bottle...at the tail end of what I call "The lost decade of Port".

Last night I opened a 1996 Krohn's Colheita. Tasting note posted.

NV Krohn 30 Year Old Tawny, bottled 2013, purchased from Premier Cru. June #3! And June is only half over?!?

I didn't take notes, but I'd put it at 92-93 points. Very nice.

A particularly stunning bottle of 1967 Vargellas was opened by a friend last night. Amazing beauty. I have seen a couple at this level before, but an equal number that were past prime, with fruit receding and menthol and spearmint replacing the fruit and aguardente poking through. Glad this one was as good as it gets!

It was served to a table of 7 invited wine guests, blind and the guessing game was put in place by the owner. My guess and that's all it was, based on color and flavor profile, was 1970 Taylor.
