For The Love Of Port

Those on the FTLOP 2010 Port Harvest Tour had the distinct pleasure to see Bono up close and personal, even if they had been displaced momentarily. While trying to check into their rooms at the Infante Sagres, their rooms were still occupied due to a late check out by Bono and members of his entourage. We did get to see him and members of the Edge, as they departed the hotel.

Now here is another story I rec'd by email:

Bono, lead singer of U2, yesterday surprised customers DOP restaurant in Oporto(Portugal) , which had the rare opportunity to have lunch alongside the Irish singer. Housed in the Hotel Infante de Sagres in Porto, Bono took to stay in the northern city before the final concert in Coimbra, a meal in the restaurant DOP, the head Rui Paula. The lead singer of U2, who was accompanied by his wife, two managers and the wife of one of them ate, such as "amuse bouche", a cream of asparagus with bacon foam and greaves with cream cheese, continued with an entry Samosa Spicy sausage with sautéed mushrooms and finished with a "Sea bass in their habitat." The wine of the meal was the First Sunny Vineyards Albariño 2009.

First Sunny Vineyards Albariño? Albariño is a variety used in Vinho Verde, but I association the name with Spanish wines. Anyone heard of First Sunny Vineyards?

It was the 2009 Soalheiro Alvarinho Primeiras Vinhas. This is the old vines cuvee from Quinta de Soalheiro.

"Alvarinho" and "Albarino" is the same grape variety with different names, respectively, in Vinho Verde (Minho) and Galicia, which are adjacent regions.

Primeiras Vinhas was "designed" by Dirk Niepoort for Soalheiro; grapes come from the primeiras vinhas (first vines planted at Soalheiro) and around 15% of the juice is fermented in wood (used, not new wood). One of my favourite Portuguese whites.

Thanks Daniel. Originally I didn't want to know to drink what Bono drank, but to give him a hard time for drinking non-local if that was the case. (You know, the next time I run into him. ) So he did drink something local, and not only that, it sounds like something worth trying out. Now I am interested in drinking what Bono drank.
