For The Love Of Port

Here is an interesting photo up for sale at Bonham's. It's certainly unusual for a picture to be in the wine auction... but enthusiasts like us would appreciate it:

How old do you think this picture is? The Ponte D. Luis has not been built yet.... so that would make it before the 1880's. But maybe I'm not seeing it correctly? It's certainly fun to look at!

Very cool picture. The Dom Luis bridge was built in 1886, so pre that date. It looks to be taken from a little west of where the Fonseca lodge is at. A little hard to tell, but the last picture, on the left where the boats are moored up, looks like about where the current bridge is at.

What I don't see is the old bridge that the Dom Luis replaced. It may be there, but hard to tell from the small picture on line.

I think I can see the bridge that the Dom Luis replaced. I can certainly see the "towers" that were on each side of the river. Yes... hard to see the detail in the photo. I agree on the location - the bluff overlooking the Fonseca Port Lodge.

Yeah, the bridge is there. Either that or there's a sand bar that runs across the entire width of the river. :)

To me, this looks like two distinct photos that have been spliced together. The sky coloration at the seam is different and although the "splice" looks nearly perfect, the coloration is a definite giveaway.
