Hello everyone,
I will have some family over this weekend and I'm tempted with anyone of these 3 that are currently in my cellar. Help me pick one. Or tell me which one I should hold on to longer.
1) Sandeman VAU 1999
2) Noval Silval 1998
3) Quinta do Vesuvio 2001
Thanks
Paul

The last time I had the 99 Vau was about 1 1/2 to 2 years ago. It was a little young then, but was a good bottle. It should be drinking quite nicely by now.
But what ever you chose, please post back and let us know how it went.

I've tasted the silval 98 a few times recently and did not like it very much. I'd let it a few years in the bottle before opening it. The Vau, I've tasted 97 and 2000 and it was always enjoyable in its youth. Vesuvio 2001 is very very good right now and probably the best of the 3 right now. If you have only one bottle of Vesuvio, I'd take the Vau, else go for Vesuvio and charm them!

Ok, so I can come back and share the VP we had on sunday.
Thanks for the votes by the way.
Turns out my Vau was a 2000 and not 99 as per my original post. (that's memory for you). So since 2000 is a big year, I decided now wasn't the time for any 2000.
Conclusion, I opened the Noval Silval.
Opened at 2PM and pour it into a captain's decanter via a cheese cloth.
First taste and smell happened at 3:30pm. It was very closed with just a slight dry grit at the end. almost no scent, maybe some wood/oak.
Most of the drinking happened between 4 and 5pm. Outside in hot temps.
It was a hit, there were no big port drinkers present but everyone felt that it was a very good wine. Myself, I was very happy to see the wine open up and reveal more information. Sliky smooth start with a very noticeable grit and dry finish... typical single quinta finish. I had not had a noval in some time and this was my first Silval so no frame of reference.
bottom line, despite the hot humid temp, this wine drank well and quickly, no one felt that it was too much. I would give it a 7/10 only because it does most things right but isn't going to stay etched in my memory for years like some others I've had.
I had the last sip, the next day in the evening and by then the nose was just alchool.
one last word on the color, since I didn't cover that. Ink dark. As is expected from such a young VP. Some of my guests were struck by how dark it was, appeared to stain the class in matter of speaking, if you see what I'm trying to convey as you swirl the wine.
Thanks all, I feel there is so much port knowledge and experience in the members of this forum. I consider myself lucky to be here with you. even if I've had perhaps 200 ports in 20 years and own about 30 currently, i feel that I'm still not even close to some of you.
Cheers
