Thanksgiving, what are you opening?

Post by Andy Velebil »

With Thanksgiving just hours away, what do you plan to open for turkey day? Any special Ports or Portuguese wines?

I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving [cheers.gif]

Circumstances have led us to a small celebration. I'm thinking something with barrel age, maybe a Quevedo reserve tawny or colheita.

3 Burgs, an Iniskillin Ice Wine and two Ports: 1941 and 1951 Kopke Colheita.

Moet Brut Imperial - Better than I thought it would be. Nice jump up from White Star for sure

1997 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace - Those who say DC wines started to drop off around then are missing out on a stellar bottle. Wow, was that bottle something else. 4 hours decanted and was like heaven for Cab Sav. Port like along cherry notes that reminded me of a mature Burg. Really impressed.

Kirkland 10 Year Tawny - Blened by TFP. I don't it's the same blend as when it first came out a few years ago. Still rocks for the money.

1960 Croft and 1960 Taylor. Opened a Porto Rocha Glorious 50th Anniversary on Tuesday night, and might open a 1938 Kopke Colheita later this week of the Croft and Taylor don't last long enough. [beg.gif]

Even though I took a number of bottles, my uncle wouldn't let me open any. Instead he opened a 2002 Chateau St. Jean Reserve Chardonney and a 2003 Robert Mondovi Oakville, the later which was drinking very well. I'm home now and I cracked open a NV Quevedo Special Reserve Tawny Port.

My wife's "pretend" cousin and her family are coming over at around dinner time, tonight. I am planning to open a 1985 Dow's since she seems to prefer Vintages.

If anyone has recommended decant times, I would appreciate the advice. Otherwise, I will shoot for about 6 hours.

As long a decant time as you can wait. Heck, this vintage can go 24 hours decanting.

I skipped the turkey and went straight for the pies - Graham's 20 Year Old Tawny with both apple pie and pumpkin pie. Very nice, and more than adequate recompense for burning my hand on the oven door!

Well, we went through 22 bottles, unfortunately, none of them Portuguese, and thus of no interest whatsoever to this forum.
