Re: Port/Madeira/Sherry tasting in L.A. / Redwood City / San Francisco Sat Dec 4
I hope some people got to make this as it was a very good tasting. I got to meet some very nice and enthusiastic people at the hollywood event and hopefully some of them will join us here on the Forum. I was the first one there and after a nice conversation with the store employee, he rearrainged the line up from his original idea below. Putting the Madeira last, and the 2007 Smith Woodhouse after the older VP's.
I'll get some notes up soon, but here is some impressions.
Lustau Almacenista "José Luis Gonzales Obregon" Fino del Puerto de Santa Maria
I liked this with it's yeastyness
Lustau Almacenistas "Pata de Galina" Oloroso
More tawny like and oxidized, liked the previous better.
Blandy's 10 year old Malmsey Madeira
This was a big hit with most people there, and me too, a solid bottle.
Dow's 10-year-old Tawny Port
This also was well received by most and one of the better bottles I've had
Graham's 20-year-old Tawny Port
Seemed more people liked the Dow's than this, and I thought it was on par with the Dow's
Sandeman 30-year-old Tawny Port
This bad boy rocked, 'nuff said.
2003 Fonseca LBV Port
Unfiltered, wasn't decanted and it seemed to suffer from a lack of decanting. I've had a better bottle.
2007 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port
This was a very good bottle and a number of people I was talking to really enjoyed it.
1985 Warre Vintage Port
I think it's safe to say i didn't hear anyone talk bad about this one. Even with a short decant it was delicious and stole the show
1983 Gould Campbell Vintage Port
Popped and poured which really hurt this, with it's excess heat. I tried to explain to people it just needed a lot longer decant to mellow out.
