TN: Cossart & Gordon 5 YO Bual

Post by Ray Barnes »

This was acquired about a month ago while my membership had lapsed. It also happened to be my only madeira purchase of 2010, on sale for $11.86 Cdn/375ml bottle. Maybe it does not qualify as a coup unlike some other buys seen on another thread, but still a good buy.

If one can imagine the character of a simple madeira such as Casa dos Vinhos, heated by estufagem (sp?) and aged only 3 years, and the excellent H & H 10 YO Boal, this one falls somewhere in the middle. It definitely has good madeira color and flavour profile, with nuttiness, caramelized sugar, chocolate and fruitiness, and a pleasant bouquet, but not much length or weight in the mouth. Still I think it is a very good drink and definitely worth having if the price is right. At its relatively modest price, it gets let's say a strong B grade. Recommended.

I also served this to a friend who had never tried madeira in his life. To my surprise, he absolutely loved it. One more convert! :D
