Why the jealousy? You can do BYOB in Washington state. Now Colorado is another story--illegal!

Actually, some restaurants may permit it, but the vast majority do not.

And some states, like Michigan, simply don't allow customers to bring alcohol into any licensed premises. So, it is unknown how the individual restaurants would react.

A few that do not have licenses will allow BYOB, but I don't know whether they are allowed to permit this or are just "getting away with it".

Peter,

Often times it is "just getting away with it." It sure as heck is nothing that should be a big deal, but those that collect tax dollars certainly would object to the practice.

In my perfect little world, all restaurants would have BYOB allowances with a fee of $10 per bottle, up to five. $100 flat fee if six of more. To me this seems fair for both sides ... consumer and restaurateur.

I'm assuming that in a truly enlightened system, shipping FROM anyone TO anyone is legal (and manages to collect any due taxes in the process), so the tax collectors should have no beef whatsoever.

It's the people (distributors), who pay big bucks to elect the bosses of the tax collectors (politicians), who object to things like this.

I feel for many of you who can't BYOB to a restaurant. I love being able to do that here in California and do so very often. If they ever tried to outlaw it here there very well might be a riot that erupts with so many wine lovers and wineries here.
