TRADER JOE'S does it again - Amarone anyone?

Post by Roy Hersh »

I love Italian wine. Yes, without question, I'd be happy to drink Italian wine any day of the week. I particularly love the wines of the Veneto region (both white and red) and especially Valpolicella and Amarone. Trader Joe's has been stocking a $17 Amarone which is worth 2-3x that price and with an extended decant, rivals many in the $50+ range. Check out the Conte di Bregonzo 2007, Amarone della Valpolicella. This is really fine wine for the price, a solid 90 pointer for sure. I need to go back and grab a case of this to pair with our casual Italian dinners.

Amarone at TJ's? Wow is right at that price. Have you tried their Barolo at around the same price? I was impressed at the price point and intend to go back for some more, but now I may just pick up the Amarone instead.

Italian wines seem to be a value of recent. [cheers.gif]

I did try the Valpolicella from the same label at TJ's (wait, there were two different amarones there, am I talking about the wrong label?), but was not too excited about it, though maybe I was supposed to decant it? Glad to hear that the Amarone fared better, anyway. I noticed they also have a brunello that's around $16, but haven't tried that yet, either. My favorite Italian offering so far was the 2007 Incanta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano at $11. Thus far the 2008, which has supplanted it on their shelves, has not measured up to the 2007, unfortunately.

On an unrelated note, I haven't seen the Espiral vinho verde on the shelves at TJ's lately. I hope my favorite $4 offering hasn't been discontinued.
