TN: Barbeito 1929 Verdelho

Post by Eric Ifune »

Bottled 10-96
Opened for 36 hours.
Dark coppery color with new green olive oil rim.
Huge nose. Grapefruit, cream caramel, raisins. A touch of VA to give lift.
Very full and rich for a Verdelho. Intense. Almost Bual-like sweetness, but the high acidity keeps it in the Verdelho range. Long, tangy finish. I really like this a lot; perhaps even more than the 1905 and 1912 D'Olivera Verdelhos which were my favorite 20th Century Verdelhos. 94 points.

I like this a lot. The notes are pretty close to what I've experienced. I plan to open a D'Oliveira 1912V next year to observe the centennial of Fenway Park and the victory of the Boston Red Sox over the NY Giants in the 1912 World Series. I think that will be a good occasion to open the 1929 and compare them side by side.

A very good wine but was best the first day with no airing(IMO). It was not as good

the second day-after I used it as a wine tasting dessert(had it 3 times). I want

Madeira's that I can drink over an extended period of time.
