For The Love Of Port

The Vintage Port 1970 was a relative disappointment - though still a good wine. But after such an outstanding wine as the '63 what could not be a relative disappointment? It was darker in fruit tones than the '63 with a strong liquorice aroma. It was more monolithic and less lively than the older wine.

Sorry to hear that this bottle of Taylor '70 was not showing well. It can happen. Top bottles are quite fine indeed. I hope your next one shows perfectly.

Roy and I may disagree a bit here, but IMO the '70 Taylor has reached a plateau and bottle dependent even started a slow decline. The past 4-5 times I've had it, it has really seemed to have lost it's luster even from a few years ago.

Two weeks ago I had this from magnum and a 750ml bottle a week later and were both disappointing when compared to past bottles I've had several years ago.

I enjoyed an excellent bottle with both Glenn & Roy (all scoring 95+), but that was 18 months ago (time flies!) - so maybe it time to have another to contribute to this thread!

Unfortunately my only other 1970s besides Taylor and Fonseca are Royal Oporto and Martinez. So I might have to go shopping first!

Well, you know, I "might" be able to convince you to open something else so that I can open a Taylor or Fonseca!

Well an evening dinner with friends (Thanksgiving & xmas all rolled into one) happened last night, which i was informed a Taylor's 1970 would be present - so i was hoping, to be following through with my suggestion of trying it again and to contribute to this thread - the 1970 turned out to be a '70 Dow ( what a hardship!! )

You should have put your foot down and demanded the Taylor's

Not wanting to hijack this thread regarding Taylor's 70 - i'll keep it brief (this was actually caused by no note taking and lots of Fleurie & Gevrey-Chambertin before the Port)

in answer to the question;

very well - still slightly young with a little spirit even after 10 hrs decant but tawny edged and well balanced across the palette, Cherries and spice - not too shabby! 92 Points

Excellent. Good to hear you had a solid bottle. Amazing how youthful best bottles can still show.
