It should be noted in the article:

As they have grown in rarity, and the sources of supply diminsh, the price of Madeira on the world market has skyrocketed. Though many of the older wines arguably are worth whatever you may be asked to pay, the rising tide -- combined with Madeira's mystique -- has also raised the prices of mediocrites to the levels of the greats.

This is not just a rare Cult wine issue. It is a matter of that there may be just a couple of dozen bottles left in the world (including the island's stash) of a particular old wine, for example the 1795 Barbeito Terrantez or 1802 Acciaioly Terrantez. Given the growth of the Madeira category in the past decade, (as I know you know this already ... but it is for others reading here) many of the great bottlings we see today will be extinct inside of another decade ... except for a rare showing on the auction block.

Correct about very old wines, very few, of course. Very, very few.

But still exists good stocks of wines at OK prices, of especially D'Oliveiras, back to 1850. Also Barbeito.

But our discussion earlier was about wines from the past 50-70 years, plentiful still , very plentiful, still VERY resonable prices, maybe for another 10 years.

By the way, you asked me about Justinos in the earlier thread:

Looked up in my logbook. I have a 1890 Malvasia. Of course only one, not tested.

I know your area very well and since I am often in the US, I might sneak in when you are on a wine-excursion to Europe !

In 1969, as a young student, I had a summerjob at Seattle P.I doing studies of transportation of the newspaper to all areas around Seattle. I lived at the shore of Lake Washington, had a car and dated a girl in Bellevue, just around the corner of your hometown !!
