I'll guess there are a more wineries than breweries, but go lower than Glenn with 12,000. There are a bit over 1500 breweries now in the U.S., with the expanding number passing the pre-Prohibition peak just in the last decade.

Lots of excellent guesstimates above. Considering that there were just over 6,800 wineries in the USA as of September 2011 ... with wineries in every one of the 50 states, how about this comparison:
The entirety of Italy would fit into the land mass between Los Angeles and San Francisco (incorporating the width of CA) and that Italy maintains over 55,000 bonded wineries and one can envision the future growth potential within the US wine scene.

Wow, so Washington state has a little over 10% of all the wineries in the USA? I'd have never guessed the percentage was that high!
