Good Port based mixed drinks for Mother' Day Brunch

Post by Phyllis D »

Yes, I know doing a mixed drink from a good Port is like … well … being a heathen. :Naughty:

But then again I’m looking to convert as many non-Port drinkers as possible before Port Day 2013. [d_training.gif] What a better way to start than to come up with a few Port drinks that will go well with Mother’s Day brunch. We need more female port drinkers.

First thing I was thinking of was a Mimosa style drink with:
-Blood orange juice (so the drink doesn’t look brown)
-Reserve Ruby
-Club soda
Dust with a kumquat sugar (ground kumquat skin that has been dehydrated with sugar) or use a curl of sugared lime rind on the edge of the glass.

Or how about a Lively Raspberry French Toast Martini:
-Cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice sugar to rim the martini glass
-Raspberry reduction drizzled inside the glass
Shake the items below and pour into glass (chills the drink and slightly flattens the soda)
-Taylor 20 yr Tawny
-Club soda
Decorate with a sprig of mint.

There must be many Port based mixed drinks out there already. What is your favorite, or what would you try?

Is this too far out into left field?

Hi Phylis,

Those who know me will no doubt confirm that I am a broad-minded kind of guy when it comes to experimenting with all things to do with Port.

My favourite Port based mixed drink would be:

10ml of Croft 1945 + 10ml of Croft 1945 + 10ml of Croft 1945 + 10ml of Croft 1945 + 10ml of Croft 1945 + 10ml of Croft 1945.

Mix all of these ingredients into one glass and you have the perfect Port-based drink [friends.gif] [cheers.gif]

You can vary the recipe by using such diverse alternatives as Cockburn 1908, Fonseca 1927, Sandeman 1935, Taylor 1948, etc. But please only use one source for each mixed drink

At the risk of further exciting Derek and some of his friends from that side of the pond, let me suggest pink/rosé Port for your cocktails. Croft has a bunch of suggestions on their website. Sandeman had some general Port cocktail recipes on their site too, last time I checked.

Thank you Eric,

Most of those are what I expected.

 (WAIT - Derek hide your eyes)

Another things that I thought of that was also on the Sandeman's site was Port jello "shooters" but in some sort of cute shapes such as watermelon for a ruby Port, lemons for a white Port or how about filling a raspberry or strawberry with a young tawny shooter. Why the shapes: because it would appeal to the other women as something "cute" so they would be more tempted to try it.

This is a good exercise, I am getting more ideas as I go to the suggested sites and type responses to postings. :yumyum:

I tried the Port-Jello thing and I can tell you they were horrible. I'd avoid that one for sure. Although I think we should make Derek eat them as punishment
