1950 Faja dos Padres Terrantez

Believe it or not, this youngster is one of the greatest Terrantez, I've ever had. That's saying a lot. Now it lacks another 150 years in wood, but otherwise, is the finest Terrantez ... in my opinion ... vinified in the 20th century, bar none. I opened this for Dirk Niepoort on his first of four nights staying with us. He was very impressed and I also showed him the RWC Verdelho, which he also liked although it is certainly not in the same league. I've had a bunch of these, but this is my next to last bottle of the 1950. An absolutely brilliant bottle, but coming from Faja dos Padres, the "Nacional" vineyard of Madeira ... it is no surprise really. Love it!

Have you noticed any difference from the first time you tried this? These have now had ten years in the bottle.
I recently got 2 more from auction. I need to try one soon.

It is freakin' awesome. I can't say there is much in the way of evolution, but they do seem a bit more taut and intense than they had been previously. Whether that is just my perception or reality, is questionable.

For anyone who missed the opportunity to get this wine in the past, or who wants to get another bottle, RWC has one bottle in stock. And for only $850 you can buy it.
I like this madeira a lot, but that seems a little high. I'm glad that I have 3 left.

They were $200-ish on release

Nope, the first time around they were only $75 per bottle. There WAS a 2nd bottling, not as great as the first, that took place several years later. They were more expensive and nearly entirely TNM based.

So if they were mostly TNM, isn't that a bit of false advertising?

I think Roy is referring to the RWC New Orleans. I bought the 1950T FDP when it was first offered in the March 21, 2006 RWC newsletter for $195. It has gone up since then. I think that it was $395 the next time they offered it.

Ok I was a little confused as the thread is about the 1950 FDP.

I was wrong and thinking of the New Orleans, so thanks for that wake up call, Gary!
Yes, I bought some on release too and opened a few of them with the co-owner and his family ... a couple of times at Faja dos Padres with travelers to the island on our Fortification Tour(s). I believe I have one bottle left and think there was a strict 3 bottle limit on the initial offering.
I am blown away that the price is nearly $900. I'd love another six, but I wouldn't pay more than $300 for these. Love the wine though and blind if you told me it was 100 years older, I'd believe that. Love this one!
