Niepoort 1985

Post by Derek T. »

Can I please have opinions on Niepoort 1985.

I have never tasted it but have been offerred some at what looks like a ridiculously low price. WS have this at 92 points but I don't know if that was at release or whether or not the Niepoort is on the list of wines from '85 that have sufferred from VA problems.

Thanks

Derek

The 92 points is what Suckling gave Niepoort on release, if not before it actually hit the market in Nov. of 1987 ... or Feb. in the UK back then.

I have TNs from a couple of experiences with this bottling (my first purchase of Niepoort) in the early '90s. Although I have had just about every vintage of Niepoort from 1912 onwards, (except 1955 and 1966) I would say that in recent times, the wines from 1992 - 2003 are of a higher quality than the 1985. But again, it has been over a decade, from memory that I have had this particular vintage.

At a ridiculously low price, take the punt at one bottle, try it straight away and then either plunder the rest or pass 'em up depending on your assessment.

And I'm hosting a 1985 tasting in December, currently Niepoortless, so would welcome comment.
