For The Love Of Port

I will be traveling to Duoro for 2 nights from Lisbon and am looking for a good place to stay, as well as good wineries that aren't too "out of the way". I haven't had a chance to look into this too much so far so any assistance is greatly appreciated. I'm not as familiar with Duoro/Portugal as other wine regions - but would prefer to visit at least one port producer.

Having just spent 3 nights at this Quinta in their B&B earlier this month I can highly recommend it...Quinta do Tedo. It's perfectly situated about 1/2 way between Regua and Pinhao so it's easy to get around to various nearby Quinta's. Not to mention you can kayak, bike, hike, swim, taste their wines/Ports, etc. Far better than your typical hotel if you're looking for a more authentic place to stay. They just opened it about a year ago.

As for places nearby; Quinta de la Rosa, Sandeman's Quinta d. Seixo, Fonseca's Quinta d. Panascal, Quinta d. Carvalhas (sp? - though I've not been there yet) are all a close cab ride from Tedo.

Do you think it is necessary to reserve a time for tastings, or just show up?

Definitely make appointments when visiting quintas in the Douro. You will be treated better, will certainly be provided better wine and many places are not open to the general public and certainly not without an appointment, although there are a handful that you could visit on a walk in basis.
