Boyhood special night out

Post by Roy Hersh »

As a kid, there were two restaurants that I always looked forward to my parents taking us. One was an ancient and amazing seafood place, right on the waterfront (bay, not ocean) in Brooklyn, although I grew up in Queens. It was usually to celebrate one of my father's parents' birthdays. It was called Lundy's and was a celebrated venue until it fell into disrepair in the 1970's. It was revived and brought back to exceed the original splendor and a good friend of mine that I'd worked with in restaurants was the opening chef in the 1990's when a guy and his wife bought and renovated the property. I could swear he could have played a great "Tony Soprano" working from this place.

But, my FAVORITE restaurant as a kid, where I asked my parents to take us for MY birthday (as did my brother on his) was another denizen of fine dining, this was likely the greatest steakhouse in NYC at the time (probably today too): Peter Luger's. The original was in Brooklyn and we only went there on occasion because they opened a newer version closer to where we lived. Here is a link to that amazing restaurant:

Do you have childhood favorites that are still open today?

I'm assuming that's the same restaurant as this: http://www.peterluger.com/

for those that prefer the non-numeric URL.
