Unfortunately, I will miss this one ... as I'll be in Portugal at the time. But for any real Madeira lover, this is going to be really special and I advise you to go out of your way to attend this one!
A Family's Legacy
149 Years of Barbeito Madeiras
with Ricardo Freitas
John Howie Steakhouse, Bellevue (Seattle area), Oct. 11th
For the past 66 years, Barbeito has flourished as a producer of great Madeiras under the passionate guidance of three generations of the Barbeito family.
Mario Barbeito launched the firm by acquiring old vintages from families on the island, and then his daughter Manuela (a legendary taster) continued this important work.
Ricardo Freitas
But it was left to Manuela's son Ricardo to carry Barbeito to a new level, with winemaking that The Wine Advocate's Neal Martin has called game changing. And some of Ricardo's most important work has been for The Rare Wine Co.
In partnership with us, Ricardo has produced a series of stunning, historically rooted Madeiras that have helped bring Madeira back from the brink of oblivion in the United States. In fact, Madeira's star has risen to its highest level in a century, and no wines have played a greater role than those made for us by Ricardo.
On October 11th--at the acclaimed John Howie Steakhouse in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue--Ricardo will guide us through nearly a century and a half of Madeiras. Some will be priceless relics collected by his family over the past 70 years. Others will be wines crafted by Ricardo, his mother or his grandfather.
And if you've been to previous RWC Madeira dinners with Ricardo, you know what to expect from him: a warmly engaging, passionate guy who will fill us with insights into his family's rich history in the Madeira trade.
An incredible 19 Madeiras are on the dance card, each telling part of the Barbeito story. Included will be
two rare 19th century vintage Madeiras (1863 and 1885)
two incredibly rare pre-war vintage Malmseys (from 1918 and 1926)
a rare Malvasia Candida from the historic Faja dos Padres vineyard (the first such wine made from this fabled site in nearly a century)
and 14 other fantastic Madeiras many of which are collector's items, either too limited for release or no longer available for sale
In short, it will be a unique opportunity to experience a large number of great and rare Barbeito Madeiras, both past and present.
The wines will be accompanied by a superb Chef John Howie menu, crafted to complement the Madeiras.
The cost of this historic evening is only $295 plus tax. Needless to say, seating is very limited.
