I keep it at 3 layers.
I start with a splash of the Broadbent 10 year Malmsey. Sweet, long, with good acidity. Finish the glass. This energizes my palate for what's to come...
Then, I crank it up a little more, with something increasingly wonderful like a shot of Barbeito 30 Year Special Lote. Deeper, longer. Finish the glass.
Lastly, I 'go for broke' with something vintage. The 1950 Barbeito VF is an outstanding one currently.
By starting on the 'lower end' and working up, I fully enjoy what I start with, and increasingly push the quality/complexity envelope. There's never a 'let-down' glass.
I love the fact that Madeira, like a Cognac, can last in an open bottle, for little nips and shots. An eternal preservation system!

Barry, it sounds like you have your priorities straight. The Broadbent 10 year old is amazing value for money. I can't begin to count the number of cases of it that I've consumed over the past 12-15 years.
Is the Barbeito that you mention (1950) the amazing Faja dos Padres version of Terrantez?

Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Not Barry, but I think he's refering to the Barbeito 1950 Malvasia Favilla Vieira.
