Moscatels

There is plenty on this forum on port, madeira, and even wines from the Douro region. I have been sipping a moscatel de setubal, 2005 colheita, from Bacalhoa for a little while. It's been open for a couple of months, and I see no deterioration in its original quality.

I am also holding a moscatel do Douro, reserva, from Adega de Favaios. Both muscatels were gifts from my wife's cousin in PT. I enjoy moscatels but know very little about them. In fact, until I read the labels of these two bottles, I thought all Portuguese moscatels were from Setubal.

Can any one give me a 101 course on moscatels, or direct me someplace? They do not seem to be even a mild topic of conversation on this forum, and to that extent, why is that? Even though this is ostensibly a port forum, it delves into a lot of other portuguese based drinks, as well as Portuguese food and culture.

Hi John,

You can read a very simple introduction here http://www.winesofportugal.info/pagina. ... 3&market=2.

The "classic" producer in Setubal is JMF http://www.jmf.pt

I've had some wonderful older examples from JMF, but finding quality ones near me isn't easy. If it was I would probably drink more of it.

They are the biggest name in Moscatel, but I like Portal better.
