Mini Madeira marathon last night. The goal of which was to explore some basic bottlings and entry level Frasqueira as well ... after a couple of Ports. The Madeiras included:

1. Broadbent Reserve 5 years old

2. Broadbent 1996 Colheita

3. D'Oliveiras 1969 Sercial

4. D'Oliveiras 1988 Terrantez

5. D'Oliveiras 1968 Bual

6. Blandy's "aged 10 years" Malmsey

I'll provide some basic feedback in another thread. [cheers.gif]

Still getting my head around it. Love out it comes across focused, "pure". Too acidic for my taste I would say.

I dig the Porto Moniz verdehlo. How's the malvasia version, Eric?

Nice, obviously some old Malvasia in the blend. The Verdelho is next up on my list. [cheers.gif]

How did you find it? Did it live up to the hype?

Mine are still well hidden, far from sight.

Barbeito 30 year old Malvasia. Lovely stuff, can't wait to try the 40 year old I have on order.

Agree with your assessment on the 30. I have one lone bottle left.

Barbeito VB lote 2

And I agree on the merits of the 30 year malvasia. When I get the 40 year malvasia in the spring, I'm going to try them side-by-side.

Well, not quite freshly opened, but revisited for the first time since it was brought here many months ago by Peter Reutter during a visit. His personal baby: MadeiraWineGuide 40 year old Blend that he bottled on Dec. 1st 2011. Just 3 of these were bottled and I must say, this is Bual like and delicious. Loving it even more than when I first opened it to produce a tasting note.

I read about that blend. I'd love to try a bottle... [beg.gif]

RWC Baltimore Rainwater

This is not my style. While better than other rainwater madeiras, this wine does not seem to belong with other madeiras for my taste. It seems to have had most of the flavor and feel filtered out.

Just finished off a tail end of the Barbeito 20 yr Malvazia, lote 12089, which I had opened for two weeks now, and it just got better and better with time. Loved the marked acidity counterbalancing the typical sweetness of Malvazia. The wine seems to finish almost dry, something I found truly remarkable!
