1910 Barbeito sercial

Bottled in 2004

Lovely wine. Nutty. Moderate acidity. Smooth. Lacks the astringency of younger sercials. I see why Alex Liddel said that it was one of his favorites.

One left.

1969 Blandy's terrantez

The second bottle of a case of 6 bought from the distributor M.S. Walker, Inc. in 2012, The bottles came in straw in a sealed wooden case.

Bottling date unknown. The selo is IVM 02603510.

The section of the selo over the cork was missing and the cork (stamped "vintage 1969") was clean but broke up when removed. The bottle is dirty and looks to have been stored for several (20?) years.

Might this have been re-corked before shipping?

Gary I have solved this 1969 Terrantez for you [cheers.gif] .

About 2002-2003 I went across the border to Sweden ( only 102 km from my house ) a few
times to the local Goverment State Monopoly in the border town Charlottenberg and picked up whatever they offered.

One was the Blandy's 1969 Terrantez with the seal 02603479. On the bottle it is written bottled 1992 ...Perfect cork and seal.

Also at the same time picked up two Cossart Gordon Bastardo 1969 with the seals 02613240 and 02613250 also bottled 1992...

So look like this was "a family" bottled at the same time....... All delivered in wooden boxes with name and vintage written on the box.

Stellar. I've had this a bunch and this was a perfect bottling, albeit from a 2006 bottling. Nonetheless, it is Madeira and that really has no bearing beyond it could have remained in wood all that extra time.

Reidar,

Thanks for the information. I hadn't seen the 1969T anywhere else. It was very good. The 1992 bottling date explains the condition of the outside of the bottle.

How was that bottle, Justin? Curious to hear thoughts. I've heard generally positive reactions, but thought I'd ask you! I haven't had one myself, but I've got a couple as yet unopened.... I'm wondering what I'm waiting for! (maybe for some visitors!)

Mark,
Ive always loved it. Typically prefer my sercials in the summertime, but, squeezed this one in! Its a bit different than what you'd expect of a sercial in the fact that it is a bit sweet, but has all the other hallmarks of the varietal. I would recommend enjoying it with something salty. Iberico Jamon is an ideal pairing. Looking forward to your notes when you finally decide to take a swing.

Opened the following on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 at 11PM:

1870 Joao Romao Teixeira Terrantez
1880 D'Oliveiras Terrantez
1890 (Unkown producer) Terrantez
1954 Leacock's Terrantez
1969 Blandy's Terrantez
1976 Blandy's Terrantez
1971 D'Oliveiras Terrantez
1977 D'Oliveiras Terrantez
1988 D'Oliveiras Terrantez
NV Broadbent Old Reserve Terrantez

Tasted them all blind tonight with my group, to be revisited in February.
The group's #1- 1954 Leacock's.
The most amazing wine was the 1890 Unknown producer (ex Christie's 12/12/2014).
Other standouts were the 1870 JRT and 1880 D'Oliveiras.
In the young wines, the 1971 D'Oliveiras was fantastic, and the 1969 Blandy's was merely excellent.
I thought the 1976 Blandy's showed too much apple and stewed prune.
The Broadbent Old Reserve was the outlier, universally ranked 10th (last)-- not that it was bad, just that it was a lightweight.
