My last bottle of 40 Year Old Mae Manuela by Barbeito. Wonderful but one can never own enough of these ... well, except maybe Eric. :scholar:

Tonight, I've opened and am sipping on a 1999 Barbeito Tinta Negra Colheita (medium sweet) Single Cask 252 D+E, bottled March 2012.

It is a 375 ml. and I can't see this lasting more than another hour from now.

Tasty young juice!

Well, that didn't last long. Why not. Opened another bottle, 750 ml of 1995 D'Oliveiras Colheita, Meio-Seco.

I should have had this first. It is now tasting super dry, but that is ok, I like this quite a bit. Could be a frasqueira actually. I am sure it is nearly all TN in this, loads of dried fruits, vanilla bean and nutmeg flavors. Bottled 2016.

1895 Araujo de Barros Verdelho - a little on the sweet side of the spectrum for Verdelho, so approachable, (long decant) an easy to drink. Too easy!

Also, thanks to Sandy Becker for opening a 1933 Justino's Malmsey last night.

Jim,

Is that the order in which you plan to serve the bottles?

Gary

Hi Gary,
I planned to serve them in that order. The Verdelhos will be poured side by side, as will the Bual and the Meio Seco (which tastes like the 1903 D'Oliveiras Boal to me). The Malmseys will also be served together.
If you have other thoughts, I'd be interested.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

I just wanted to confirm that it was the intended order. I would have done the same.

How did it work out?

Gary

I made one addition to the line-up, and one alteration to the tasting order:

Morgado Pavao Sercial Claro
1905 Franca Netto Sercial
1900 JBF Verdelho
1902 Barbeito Verdelho Pico de Barcelos
1862 Texeira Terrantez
1900 JBF Bual
1908 Faria Meio Seco
1830 Unknown Producer Malvasia
1906 Welsh Brothers Malvazia

The 1905 Franca Netto Sercial is on the sweet side for the varietal.
The 1862 J R Texeira Terrantez is so amazingly bright, it might even have been better to put it between the Sercials and Verdelhos.

My favorites were the 1902 Barbeito Verdelho Pico de Barcelos, 1862 Texeira Terrantez, and 1908 Faria Meio Seco (not necessarily in that order).
Mannie's favorites were the1902 Barbeito Verdelho Pico de Barcelos, 1900 JBF Bual, and 1830 Unknown Producer Malvasia (which he clearly identified as the 1830 Quinta do Serrado, from the writing on the bottle).
These were all great wines, and we were happy to drink all of them. The Morgado Pavao Sercial Claro was the only bottle not showing well, although the last two bottles of it had been mind-blowing.
Other people at the table also included the 1900 JBF Verdelho in their top three.
The food/Madeira pairings were oustanding, from appetizers through desserts. Prune did an amazing job of food prep, presentation, and service.
A great evening!

It was a wonderful evening…and I brought home all the bottles containing unfinished Madeira.
If you are in NY in the next couple of weeks, I might still have some left to share with you.
