Blandy's 4 pack offering

Post by Roy Hersh »

COLHEITA Gift Pack Includes:

• 1995 Sercial
• 1995 Verdelho
• 1996 Bual
• 1996 Malmsey

4x500ml per pack = SRP $200

This will be arriving in the USA soon. Keep your eyes open for pre-sale for local distributors and it may be in the market in some US distributors/retailers now.

I believe I will 'gift it' to...myself.
Has anyone tried these?

I got to try these when Chris Blandy was out in So Cal on March 5th.

Unfortunately there was a miscommunication between the importer and the wine shop. And the shop was told that these were $139.99 *per bottle*.

I wasn't going to say anything with Mr. Blandy present, but my dominating thought was that he must be effing proud of himself to believe that these wines are 5x better than the Broadbent Colheita. (This also led me to a perception that all Blandy's products must be overpriced.)

That said, they were nice wines, perhaps the Bual stood out a touch. As a curiosity, I ordered a bottle of each.

When I went to pick them up, I was told there was a pricing mistake, and the actual retail was $47.99. My "one of each" turned out to arrive in the gift package mentioned here. Also it seems that while the other wines are available individually, less of the Bual was made and is only available in the gift pack.

I'm still wondering if they are worth almost 2x the Broadbent (factoring in bottle size).

Edit add: I had called the wine shop today to ask about the 4 packs. I was told they were already gone. They'd only gotten about 30 of them and they had been split up to fill orders from the tasting.

I picked up a pack today, a package breakdown below including cask and lot numbers. I'll post tasting notes when I can:

Blandy's Gift Pack TN's, bear with me, I'm not the best at this!

Sercial:
Decanted and tasted at 24hr, 48hr, 96hr. A bit shallow, heat on the nose, heat on the finish, yellow apricot color, much lighter than the 88 Barbeito Sercial. Nice acid but lacking depth. Some lemon/grapefruit rind on the finish. Reminds me a little of an entry level Rainwater.

Verdelho:
Decanted and tasted at 24hr, 48hr, 96hr. Sugary sweet, shallow, heat on the nose and finish, sauternes yellow. Drinkable but not enjoyable

Boal:
An acid-sugar-acid roller coaster, salted caramel on the nose, lots of VA. Nice finish. Drank best about a week after opening, seems like it's unraveling a bit though.

Malmsey:
BIG wine, deep cola color, concentrated, excellent balance of fruit and acid, saving the rest for cooler weather!

The Boal & Malmsey definitely salvaged the gift pack, I would buy each again if they were available in 750ml bottles. Otherwise the pack is not worth the money, the Sercial & Verdelho need a lot more time in cask, pretty disappointing purchase overall.
