I hate the NYC subway platforms in the summer, the air is too hot and so stale that you actually relish that warm urine scented breeze from a passing car; hate them in the winter - they're freezing (although the coolest place in the summer is inside a subway car, and the warmest in winter is in a car - it's just the platforms that are horrible).
And New Yorkers don't leave the city, and they barely know what is around the corner from them. My brother lives across the street from a Teddy Roosevelt museum and he didn't realize it until I told him. It's been 5 years since I informed him and he still hasn't bothered to venture inside of it.
As to walking, yes! tourists are sooo slow. NYers have somewhere to go, GET OUT OF THE WAY!
I found this earlier today.

Love it.
Took me a while to warm up to it but really miss it now.
Been out in the NJ burbs for about a year and a half, we still go in almost every weekend.

Love it. Don't and never have lived there but went quite a bit in my 20s and 30s. Always something to do and find/discover. It is akin to visiting a different culture and I think that is the key to enjoying it (for those that do not).
