For The Love Of Port

If I'm correct, we decided to do a Vintage Port in December. In order for everyone to have plenty of time to locate said bottle, shall we start figuring out what that will be. I know my free time gets less and less as the holidays approach and the more time I have to track down a bottle the better.

I think it is time we all taste the same thing again. It has been a while and was really fun to hear peoples differing opinions on the same Port.

We did decide to have a VP theme for the December tasting, in honour of the fact that December seems to see so much VP opened in so many different places.

But the trouble with selecting a single VP is that it can be real tough to track down. We managed a very successful horizontal a few months back where we all tasted a 1991 wine. That made for some interesting views.

So how about a vertical theme for December - say we all taste one of the wines from the Taylors' stable (Taylors, Vargellas or Terra Feita)?

I like the idea of trying one particular producer. Knowing that many of the regulars already own this bottle of Vintage Port ... I suggest we try the 1987 Quinta de Vargellas. It is easy to find, if someone needs to go out and buy a bottle too!

My understand is that in December we would each choose a different wine from 1 port producer (Taylor seems to be preferred) and each post a note that together will provide a good cross section of that producers products. I think it would be good to stick to this rather going for a single wine as it may allow more people than normal to join in on our festive VT. Anyone can find a bottle Taylor's anywhere in the world but not many will want to track down a particular bottle.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I did Varg '87 quite recently, so don't want to re-visit... but, hang on, I'll go dyslexic - and do the Varg '78 instead...

I've got myself a bottle of the VVV to try at Christmas as part of the December virtual tasting. I'd prefer not to go for a specific wine but leave it open to choice as "Any port from the Taylors' stable" which would range from Ruby, through Tawnies to SQVP and VP's.

I am torn between a Terra Fieta 96, a Vargellas 65 and a 20 yr old Tawny bottled in 1973

BTW, I assume they are bringing this in on the cusp of 2007 so that folks looking for a great bottle of 40th birthday or anniversary wine, will be able to grab them early (althouth I would go for these ... I'd celebrate with the Nacional from this vintage). UH OH ... damn, I turn 50 in '07 ... middle aged, old man etc... poor me!

I managed to grab a bottle of the '67 Vargellas a few weeks back and I can say that it was really enjoyable - but not the blockbuster that Roy has had the chance to drink (mine was a UK bottling by BB&R).

But I'd certainly be interested in getting a few more. I wonder if Taylors will also be releasing a parcel into the UK....

I was able to get 3 (max # you can get) of the 1967 Vargellas from the RWC today. Can't wait to get them after the holidays and try one.
